The new products from Kremer Pigmente

For over 40 years, luthiers around the world have used Kremer Pigmente’s products for their violins. Also in this special edition of Cremona Musica, the German company will present its new products, with an increasingly vast catalog. We interviewed David Kremer to find out more.

Which are the main peculiarities of your products for lutherie?

Our products are for the surface: resins, oils and solvents, from which violin makers themselves make their paints and glue for traditional join wood together. Many customers also buy primers to obtain similar brownish primers as Stradivari. We also sell many paints and a variety of historical and modern pigments.

How important is the historical correctness of the varnishes for luthiers, and how do you guarantee it?

A violin’s ground coat and varnish has an impact on the elastic modulus of the wood as well as on the impedance of the sound transmission. They also change the harmonic development and intensity. The visual effect of a varnish is of particular interest when the instrument is played under the spotlight.

What is the importance of dialogue with luthiers and musicians in your job?

As a family-run company, we consciously apply socially sustainable business practices. Within our culture, corporate values and behavior and working methods, we actively engage in relationships with our customers. In the communication process, not only should the mutual exchange be focused on, but also the interaction of craft processes with regard to their historical and current meaning.
