"P r i s m", the opera that just won the Pulitzer

The 36-year-old American composer Ellen Reid has been awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Music, for her new opera: p r i s m.

The opera deals with a woman’s psychological trauma from sexual assault, and was premiered in November by the Los Angeles Opera.

The jury decided to give the prize to Reid because “this bold new operatic work uses sophisticated vocal writing and striking instrumental timbres to confront difficult subject matter”.

The composer received a prize of $15,000.
