The legend of guitar John Monteleone in Cremona

The story of a legend of lutherie such as John Monteleone should pass from Cremona. Monteleone, one of the best luthiers for guitars (specialized in archtops and mandolins), is realizing a documentary dedicated to his passion. A movie that will be released next years, with interviews to guitar heroes like Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler, that is passing also from Cremona.

Some scenes have been filmed at the Museum of Violin of Cremona on 18 June. A temple of lutherie where are collected instruments made by Stradivari and other legendary luthiers. Here, Monteleone has met the staff of Cremona Musica International Exhibitions, the great fair that is an International point of reference for high-quality musical instruments, and that is hosting a hall dedicated to guitars, the Acoustic Guitar Village (27-29 September, Cremona Exhibition Center).

Just a story to understand the importance of Monteleone in the world of guitars: Mark Knopfler, leader of the Dire Straits, dedicated to him a song, after having commissioned him a guitar. Enfant-prodige of lutherie, Monteleone started crafting instruments when he was just 13, studying music at the same time. He went on with his studies until the graduation, becoming a teacher of music, without stopping his work as instruments repairer and builder. The work of luthier became his first job since the '70s. Then he started collecting and repairing guitars, mainly archtops and mandolins, from the world of blues and bluegrass.

The name of Monteleone was already known in the world of music, but he became really famous when Mark Knopfler commissioned him a guitar. He has already been at Cremona Musica as guest star of the 2015 edition, and his among the luthiers mentioned in the book Archtop Guitars: The Journey from Cremona to New York. Considering these novelties, we look forward to a likely comeback of Monteleone at Cremona in 2020 during Cremona Musica.
